To bring some succor to these people, cut off from normal society by insurmountable communication barriers, All Kerala Association of the Deaf (AKAD) is established in 1974 at Kunnamkulam, Thrissur District and re - set as state level organization in 1979, registered head office was situated in Thrissur the cultural city of Kerala . AKAD is affiliated to All India Federation of the Deaf, New Delhi and associated with World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and its Asia pacific regional secretariat. At present AKAD is having affiliated with 14 districts units and more than 20,000 registered members.
AKAD conducts various programs such as Leadership training camps, IT technology training, State level meetings, workshops, seminars , strike against Government if necessary, International
Deaf day celebrations, awareness campaign and Flag week celebrations. District units are conducting various programmes under the guidelines issued by AKAD as and when required.
